Ch Shujat Hussain has remained a key stakeholder in Pakistan’s politics for decades. He followed the footsteps of his father, Ch Zahoor Elahi, who was assassinated in Lahore in 1981. Hussain became a member of the Majlis-e-Shura in 1981. He was elected on Federal and Provincial seats from Gujrat in the non-partisan 1985 General Elections. Hussain acted as the Federal Minister for Industries and Production during the Government of General Zia-ul-Haq from 1985-1988. Ch Shujat remained in office as the Federal Minister for Defence Production from 1987-1988. Hussain became the Chairman of the Senate Committees on Defence Production and Aviation from 1993-1997. Ch Shujat Hussain became the 27th and 29th Interior Minister from 1990-1993 and 1997-1999. He was then posted as Minister for Railways from 1998-1999. He became the Prime Minister of Pakistan for three months in 2004.
